The Gypsy Vanner was bred by Gypsy Travellers in Ireland and Britain that had the desire to create the perfect horse trailer to pull their colorful covers vardo that led to the families and their belongings in a fantasy fashion. In fact, the word "Vanner" in Chambers English dictionary defines as "a right horse to pull a caravan." "It's a good Vanner" is a common comment to see a horse Gypsy admired. They designed the race to half black and half white, and they wanted to have a "wow" factor so that families could have competitions in which horse was the best. Although the majority of Roma do not live in Vardo, maintained and reproduced Vanner as a status symbol and a source of pride among the Roma.
Since the Gypsies have kept little or no written records during the past century, the determination of the breeds used to create the Vanner had to come verbal discussions with many of the older Gypsy men in Europe. In theory, Gypsy Vanner developed a combination of British, Irish and Welsh races including the Clydesdale, Shire, Friesian, Dales Pony, Highland Pony Pony and Fells, all who have the wonderful personality type docile and traditional workhorse in cold blood.
