Ski Report - Celestial has about a foot of fresh matter
The classic Tahoe dump is happening now. It's the kind of snow that will be remembered for many years to come in a litany of tall tales that start with "Do you remember the snow of January 2010?"
A series of winter storms that began during the Martin Luther King holiday on January 17 issued a couple of inches of snow to the highest peaks of Lake Tahoe and nearly a foot in the lake level. But that's just the beginning. As the week progresses, the storms are expected to increasingly fierce, with cooler temperatures and more precipitation. On Saturday, Sierra Crest is likely to have 10 inches of fresh snow. Forecasters expect this to be the largest series of production of the snow storms Sierra has been in the past five years. It appears that El Niño is here to stay for the rest of January.
As of Tuesday, January 19, Alpine Meadows, Boreal, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Kirkwood, Squaw Valley and are reporting more than 20 inches of new snow. Sugar Bowl and Sierra-at-Tahoe are reporting 18 inches, and Celestial is almost a foot of fresh matter. So far this year the Tahoe stations with the deepest accumulation of snow, all over 80 inches - are Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood, Squaw Valley and Sugar Bowl.
