How to check the quality of silver purchases
It was the other day and found a hand made jewelry sales to charity made by recipients same charity to help support the charity that they support. Great idea, I thought, these people are learning a trade and how to handle a business and earning the respect and confidence back to themselves as they are shown how to get out of poverty. "Teach a man to fish" is one of my favorite quotes.
Of course I immediately decided to support them, and check through the jewelry to look for some pieces to give to my grandchildren. When asked if some of the pieces were made in silver, I was assured that the beautiful silver bracelets made for children were silver and definitely not "Green products" in the skin. I must admit I doubted such cheap pieces of silver in quality, but later bought it anyway and I gave them to my grandchildren and enjoyed the sparkle in their eyes much as the gleam in his arms. Yet by the end of the day, both of the girls had "green" weapons.
Now this was a charity and it was not important that this happened, but I got to thinking that lots of people, and I in the word of the seller and find out later that this issue was not silver at all, or certainly did not contain enough silver to be called silver. This is fine when you buy from a charity, would have given them the money anyway, but what if you have paid a good price for something you thought or said quality was silver?
What do you look for when buying silver?
How you know the silver sterling quality or low quality silver?
If you are looking to make sure you are buying an item of silver law these are the signs to look for:
- Check the closing (if any) is usually located in the close is a small label (You can you need a magnifying glass) with the initials "SS" or numbers "0925", indicating that this piece is sterling silver or silver. If the 999 mark, says this is called Fine Silver and is 99% pure, which also means it is softer, or 900 means that the silver coin is quality, this is not right, being of good quality and more difficult. Beware of unscrupulous vendors who put a clip of pounds in a low quality item, this is where you check the compatibility color between the closure and the object itself.
- If the item has a label that contains the numbers 750 or 825 this is still good quality silver, no However, it is the pound sterling, which is what the silverware or table is made of and you should not pay the premium price for the item. Other possible the marking is "Silver German, "Indian Silver," "silver Omtana," Mexican Silver, "" Silver Taxco, "this does not necessarily mean that is good quality silver, however, a little research in the area is the item comes in will give you an idea. Most Mexican and Taxco silver is one of the largest areas silver mine in the world and therefore will often be of high quality silver as it is so available there.
- Other names to consider are "Alpaca or alpaca "this is usually" alpaca ", and often contains no silver at all, but rather a mixture of nickel, copper and zinc, other countries Asia also have many grades of silver and therefore you have to prove their money before buying.
- If you are buying a title = "Gallery Jewelry Rings> pendant or a ring or other item that does not have a silver hook that still must be marked or stamped in the same way as Somewhere over the issue in an inconspicuous place. If you see the letters SP this is a sign of the silver plate and this is not sterling silver, but rather has a silver layer that has been electro-plated. Electro plating has been done since ancient times and electrolytic silver pieces have even been found in the pyramids.
- If you can not find a mark or a stamp on the piece you are looking for silver, not to say that silver is not, many countries require precious metal articles are sealed. However there is a way to test if you really want and think is worth the time and trouble to do so. Silver can be tested with nitric acid, he advise him to a jeweler or a pawn shop to do this because involvea using an acid that can burn skin. To apply to make a scratch in the tiny item in an inconspicuous place and apply a drop of nitric acid at the site. If the land becomes a creamy color that is of high quality silver, usually sterling. If becomes black, silver coin is the quality and turns green if it has high amounts of copper and silver, so it is of poor quality and a golden bronze means a lot which means this is a matter of money.
- A simpler way to test is to use only one magnet, silver itself is not magnetic at all so the greater the content of other metals is likely that the poor quality. However, many other metals are not magenetic well and this is not a purity test itself.
At times there is a piece that is not sterling silver, but still the high quality with a good price, this will be only by silversmith who designed that piece is a true and traditional designs are known and collected for the originality of its parts Jewelry Gallery "> clothing art. If you are selling a piece with this ad make sure that the seller can back up its claims by showing that the awards or the acclaim that the designer has won and a certificate of authenticity that the piece has been designed in fact by that person.
