Stock ... The highest form of commercial photography

Stock Photography has always been considered the ugly stepchild of commercial photography. Originally photos discarded material consisted of tasks ... the second "if you will. The strategy for the success of a shooter to get as much content values was in the collection as ... methodology is not possible to get a reputation for quality!

Take the "quality" of the species

Along came Tony Stone (Tony Stone Images ... now Getty Images) which shifted the focus of much material is in a collection of how well the material in a collection is. The paring down the number of images, keeping only the best, made a lot of dupes of a given image (then had to send transparencies ... so most gullible of an image given the image may be facing more potential buyers at once), and became a success enormous. My original broker was an afterimage call the company. When Stone bought the first thing that happened was that sent almost all of my new material me and only kept a handful of images. The second thing that happened was that my sales tripled!

Tony bought Getty Images stone and began to apply the principles of stock photography business. It seemed as if my actions are finally beginning to be viewed with a little more respect ... then RF happened. And again, the emphasis shifted to the quantity of material could be in some cases the photographers who sell their files all at a fixed price.

The saturation of images in Stock

Now stock photography, is saturated with a gazillion photos ... some amazing quality ... and large number of well-executed but repetitive lifestyle and business image. With a host of input supply and non-professionals in the market through agencies as Istockphoto, population is still the ugly stepchild of commercial photography ... but not me.

Creative Freedom

For me, the action is the highest form of commercial photography. It gives the photographer something of real value ... creative control. As a photographer, photo agency I can choose what you want to photograph. I arrive at the photograph of my subject at all I want to do. Unlike photography assignment no limits ... No directors of art to satisfy (or trust), no account executives for, any customer who impose their own perceptions about their work. No limits!

This does not mean that there is no challenge ... there are challenges galore! While there is no client of restrictions ... there are no customers to finance shooting.

While there are no limits to what can trigger ... no one else coming up with ideas for you. While there is no art directors to impose their points of view ... is until you have that vision and be true to it.

The challenges of creative freedom

the creative freedom is something that I think is a basic need of every photographer. But along with that freedom comes challenges. Few things force us to use this "creative" muscles as much as values. We must be creative to find what to shoot. We need creativity in almost all aspects of the action. Creativity in way of organizing access to a difficult topic, creativity in the way of shooting without the financial resources of a client and ... creative decisions have to be made about where and how to place the work.

As I write this I have a list of hundreds of images to create for livestock. Sometimes it takes me two years of my subconscious to finally figure how to make something work within the budget and limits access I have. That brings up another good point of exchange. There are no arbitrary deadlines ... I only suggested.

An example of an idea that took me a while to solve the budget constraints ... and the need to exercise creativity on how to get the pictures can be found in a number of shots I took with the elephants as the subject. who originally came up with the idea because he wanted to be near an elephant ... to play it over and just hang out with him for a while. So I came up with some "elephant" ideas. When I found out I would cost $ 5,000.00 to rent an elephant just to put the project in the background. A year ago I planned a trip to Southeast Asia. I will shoot in Myanmar (Burma) for a couple of weeks. would be flying to Yangon, Myanmar's capital, Bangkok. I began to wonder what I could shoot in Thailand while I was going to be there anyway. Then I came to mind ... elephants! It might be cheaper to rent one there. Yes ... an elephant cost me $ 450.00. For a day whole! Well, I have to hang out with, and touch an elephant. And in the eight months I have had the resulting images on the market I have gained almost $ 20,000.00 of images!

Due to the action I had the opportunity to "go with" a lion, a tiger and an elephant ... I had the chance to shoot a monkey on my study as well. Animals, of course, are not the only "extras" I've been able to enjoy hunting values. I spent a week (and does a good a profit out of) one of the finest penthouses in Buenos Aires, a wonderful "home" in Mexico ... Hell, I even rented a nightclub (also in Buenos Aires) and had a crazy fun time shooting into force in what was a private disco party with a group of dancers, pulsating music and smoke machines. Cool!

For me it is the highest form of public commercial work. It requires discipline, creativity, and guts (hey ... can have guts real spending large amounts of speculative money in a shootout). But as they say on TV infomercials late at night, wait ... there's more! There is friendship and fun. For me, it's much more fun to shoot the stocks if there is no "outside" pressure to perform and nobody but me to answer too. In addition, for a number of my shoots I have invited other photographers to join me. To fire the club fired him with three other photographers. We all share in the cost and worked together ... but each to produce our own set of images. A "creative" ways to reduce the cost of our meeting, to spread the time production and off the job ... and go to work with some close friends. When was the last time you invited some friends to shoot with photographers near you on a mission?

Well, there you have it. My point of view on what action is actually the highest form of commercial photography. It's all on your shoulders ... and the only limits are those you place on yourself. There should be added to those images zillions of business people cell phones ... couples or laughing at the beach. Sure you can ... but may also allow incredible challenges to give yourself the rewards are commensurate.
